BIRTH OF WACO LODGE
In 1851 seven
brethren decided to petition Springfield Lodge No. 74 at
Springfield, Texas, at that time the County seat of Limestone County
and located about fifty miles due east of Waco for a Masonic Lodge
in the town of Waco. The names on the petition were: N.W. Battle,
Claiborn Varner, Robert S. Hulme, William B. Walker, John R. Harris,
George B. Erath, and George W. Edwards.
Springfield Lodge
recommended the petition at a called meeting on Tuesday, February
11, 1851. On August 1, 1851, the dispensation was granted by the
Grand Lodge of Texas. The delivery of the Charter was for some
reason delayed, and it bears as its official date January 23, 1852.
It records the names of thirty Charter members. In January 2002 we
celebrated 150 years of existence without a break. No other
organization or business exists today in Waco can that can claim
that honor.
