Brethren:
The topic of Masonry came up during a recent luncheon with a friend. When he
asked, I told him that I belong to the most ancient, non-sectarian
fraternity in the world that requires in each member a professed belief in
one God and the life of the spirit following death of the body. I proceeded
to describe some the more superficial aspects of Masonry. As is often the
response of non-Masons, he was surprised to learn of the scope and
importance of the several charities supported by Masons. He then asked me
why a man would want to become a Mason. What is so special about being a
Mason? I answered him by alluding to my own reasons for loving and
committing to Masonry, which follow.
Our Quebe Temple is one of the very few places in Waco where good men
seeking to become better men can find peace from the concerns and troubles
of the world and gain acceptance within a society of true and worthy friends
and brothers. At the outermost door of Quebe Temple, each of us voluntarily
sheds all the worldly superficialities of titles, honors, wealth and fame.
We abandon quests for worldly power and prestige without the door. We
actively constrain all passions, such as anger and jealousy, that would
distract us and our brothers from a path of peace and harmony that each
Mason elects to tread. By the ancient convention among Masons, we cease all
talk that fosters dissention and estrangement between brothers. We never
speak of politics, religion, and vulgar and dishonorable topics and humor
that may offend our brothers’ ears.
When the outermost door closes behind us, we enter Quebe Temple as true
equals. We are brothers dedicated to self improvement through increasing our
knowledge of, and adopting within and without the lodge room, Masonic ethics
and principles. We choose to address our brothers with civility, love,
concern and encouragement. As Masons, we love to break bread and fellowship
together and we take greatest pleasure in supporting our brothers, our Lodge
and our community and all mankind through personal actions and charitable
giving. As Masons, we hope and expect that when we err, our brothers will
lovingly admonish us and support our reformation.
I finished by posing my own question: where else on earth can a man find a
non-sectarian organization so profoundly dedicated to teaching men to live
and work ethically and morally together as equals? I invite you to come to
Quebe Temple and join with your brothers in the splendid journey of
discovery and service that is Masonry.
Fraternally,
Dave Rivers, Secretary
